The rules, in thirty seconds
One phone, set down between you. Add your first names if you want the dares to call you by name, then pick a temperature: Tender for a game you could play with other people around, Playful for when it's finally just the two of you.
- Take turns spinning. The wheel has eight slots: a kiss, a whisper, a look, a confession, a caress, a dance, a dare, a gift.
- The wheel stops on a theme, and a dare from that theme goes to whoever spun.
- You do it, right there and then. Or you pass and spin again.
- A game lasts twelve spins. After the last one, what happens next is up to you.
Why a wheel beats a stack of cards
Chance does some of the work for you. With a stack, you draw, you read, you move on. With a wheel, there are those two seconds while it slows down, the pointer wavering between a dance and a confession, and you have no idea yet what's coming. That little bit of suspense is enough to nudge the temperature up.
Every dare happens on the spot, with next to nothing: your hands, your voice, a song, a chair. No props to hunt down, nothing to set up. No dares that embarrass anyone, no punishments, no charades: a Dareling dare is something you do because you want to, never to put on a show. A gift might be a compliment so precise it only fits your partner, a promise for tomorrow, or a Coupon you make up on the spot. A dare often runs against the clock: thirty seconds to make someone blush, a minute to earn a kiss without asking for it.
Passing isn't losing. If a dare doesn't feel right tonight, you spin again and owe nobody anything. The game works precisely because either of you can say no, at any point, without explaining why.
Ideas for the night
- On timed dares, the other person counts down out loud. The countdown is half the fun.
- Keep track of the gifts. A made-up Coupon, a promise for tomorrow: write them down somewhere and make good on them this week.
- Play the first few spins on Tender over drinks, then switch to Playful once the dishes can wait. The slider moves whenever you like, no restart needed.
- Before each spin, call the slot you're hoping for. If the wheel proves you right, your partner does the same dare back.
- Once the twelve spins are done, replay the dare you're both still thinking about. No timer this time.
Ways to play it differently
Long distance, over video. Keep the game open on one phone and spin on camera. Whispers go right up to the mic, looks are held through the screen, and you each dance in your own room to the same song. Kisses and caresses turn into promises for when you're together again: describe them in detail, then keep your word.
Out in public. On Tender, the wheel works quietly at a restaurant table or a bar: a look that lasts, a confession said low, a compliment handed over. Nobody nearby needs to know what you're playing.
One pass each. For a bolder game, agree to allow yourselves a single pass each across the twelve spins. A real no is still a no, any time: the rule is there to nudge you, never to push.
On a weekend away. Spin at every quiet moment: morning coffee, a walk, the way back to your room. Save the twelfth spin for the evening.
If you like dares, Truth or dare has plenty, with truths thrown in. For a game that gets you talking more, try Would you rather.
Going further with Dareling
This free wheel stops at Playful. Inside the app, Dareling also has Spicy and Scorching cards, kept for the app and always behind a safe word. And if you enjoyed the dares, the Evening Duel gives them real stakes: one phone, ten cards, a timer, and whoever cracks first loses. The other person wins a Coupon to cash in whenever the mood strikes.
The app starts without an account, in a few seconds. The Dareling magazine has more ideas for your nights in.
